Marking Bai Lu’s return after more than a year, this series is also her first fantasy romance since Till the End of the Moon (2023). The fresh pairing of Bai Lu and Ao Ruipeng initially generated strong anticipation, but the drama ultimately struggled to meet expectations. From viewership numbers to online buzz and critical reception, it fell short across multiple metrics. Despite airing on the same date as Yang Zi’s Flourished Peony, neither drama managed to recreate the massive success of their leads’ earlier works. Notably, the series never crossed the 10,000 mark on iQiYi’s popularity index.
While individual elements show promise, the drama lacks narrative cohesion. Bai Shuo and Fan Yue, though central to the plot, often feel like bystanders rather than active drivers of the story. The second major arc offers slight improvement, but by then, the focus had already shifted toward more compelling side characters and their stories. The main plot follows a predictable path, offering little suspense, whereas the subplots deliver emotional complexity and freshness that consistently outshine the central narrative. At times, the supporting characters’ arcs feel more complete and engaging than those of the protagonists, making them the primary reason to keep watching.
Overall
The latter half of the drama does little to fix the issues present in the first. The storytelling remains fragmented, with secondary arcs dominating the spotlight—one storyline even mirrors the main couple with the same actors, further diluting the impact. That said, the drama does succeed in tying up lingering plot threads, providing clarity to mysteries introduced earlier in the series.
Bai Lu’s performance as Bai Shuo remains inconsistent throughout. Although the character is written to represent compassion and righteousness, the portrayal often comes across as self-righteous and smug. This disconnect weakens audience empathy, especially when Bai Shuo frequently lectures others from a perceived moral high ground. In contrast, Dai Luwa’s Fu Ling—despite being a demon and a violent antagonist—is far more engaging. Dai Luwa adds layers of vulnerability, defiance, and emotional depth, making Fu Ling one of the most captivating characters in the series.
Another major drawback is Bai Shuo’s overly rapid power progression. Her growth feels unearned, with major victories achieved too easily despite supposed hardships and trauma. One particular confrontation, in which she effortlessly defeats a formidable opponent, undermines the emotional weight and realism of her development.
Ultimately, the drama delivers an average viewing experience. Weak narrative structure, uneven character execution, and pacing issues prevent it from leaving a strong or lasting impression.

The standout performance of the series belongs to Dai Luwa. Fu Ling is unapologetically ruthless, intelligent, and commanding—a classic yet refreshing demon antagonist. Even before her backstory is revealed, the character feels fully formed and formidable. When her past is eventually explored, it enhances rather than softens her established personality. Dai Luwa’s screen presence is magnetic, effortlessly drawing attention in every scene. Her portrayal alone makes the drama worth watching and positions her as a rising talent in fantasy roles.

The quest to collect the Five Feelings leads Bai Shuo and Fan Yue across multiple locations, introducing diverse storylines and characters. These subplots explore themes such as love, resentment, sacrifice, and regret with surprising depth. Side characters are given meaningful arcs and agency, making decisions that actively influence the overarching plot. Their stories often feel more emotionally satisfying and well-developed than the main storyline.
Emotionally Engaging Relationships
The secondary couples are a major strength of the drama. Their relationships are nuanced, emotionally grounded, and thoughtfully paced. One pairing immediately captures attention within a single episode, while another grows stronger over time with a carefully executed resolution.
